From Vermilye Reunion newsletter dated July/August 1996, by Joe Vermilye
This was the 10th reunion of our loosely formed group. It was a sparsely attended reunion, but we counted about 20 if one counts even the little noses.
The temperature was reported to be close to 100 degrees. The big log cabin lodge we rented had a natural insulation factor, so we had a place to escape the heat when we met and ate. Due to the creative ideas of Penny and Alan Massey, we cooled off with a fun game of water balloon volley ball. Most everyone got wet at least a little, but fun was had by all.
Jody (Vermilye) Wheeler did a fantastic job of barbecuing hot dogs and hamburgers. Everyone had plenty to eat as always, and the visiting was a truly pleasant experience again as usual.
Last year at Tillamook Jody had everyone write down their name and the names of their family unit on small quilt blocks. Well, this year the Quilt with all the names was completed and was put up to be raffled off. However, she decided to not raffle off the Quilt due to the low attendance, but it is completed and she did a beautiful job.
It is hard to speculate why we had quite low attendance. It could have been the weather, the location, the date, conflicts of busy schedules or many other possibilities. We did have a lot of individuals call or write and let us know they could not attend, so that indicates there is still a strong interest in what we are doing. We need to decide where we go from here, and that will be covered later in this newsletter.
Attempting to speak for at least some of the remaining 4 siblings the following seems to be true.
1. Our desire for camp out at the reunions has seriously diminished.
2. Getting someone to “pick up the ball and run with it “is more and more difficult.
3. Discussions have suggested going to every other year for gatherings
In the next several months I plan to write letters and phone some individuals. I will be asking the question “Where do we go from here?”
